Instrumental Program
Our Instrumental Program begins at the fourth grade level. We are quite unique in that approximately 98% of our fourth grade students begin to study an instrument in fourth grade. We offer instruction in all of the band instruments as well as the orchestral instruments. Students receive small group instruction in their individual instrument and begin ensemble participation within the first year of study. Instrumental students are exposed to a variety of musical styles including jazz. There are active Jazz Bands in both the High School and Middle School. Students are exposed to improvisation as early as the elementary level. There are regularly scheduled concerts at each grade level in addition to large Prism concerts centered around Music in our Schools Month in March. Our students begin attending New York State Music Association (NYSSMA) festivals while still in the elementary school and our staff are very active in MCSMA, the Monroe County School Music Association which sponsors Solo Festivals for all grade levels. Another opportunity available for young musicians in eighth through twelfth grade is the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (RPYO). Brighton was well-represented in the 2008-2009 season with eighteen students participating in the RPYO's Symphony Orchestra.
