2008-2009 Student News

News from 2008-2009:
Three Brighton High School students have been selected to participate in the 28th Annual Congressional District High School Art competition, "An Artistic Discovery".  This exhibit allows Members of Congress the opportunity to highlight the creative talents of their high school constituents.  The invitation to participate has come from Eric Massa, who represents Brighton in the 29th Congressional District of New York.  The participants this year are:  Hannah Edizel (grade 11), Ahra Gho (grade 10), and Jessica Wolfe (grade 12).

Galaxy is proud to announce that three students were recognized with certificates of achievement in the Gold Circle Awards of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.   This year, Galaxy was the recipient of the Gold Award for the 2008 magazine.  This is the first time additional students were recognized for their achievements in the Gold Circle Awards. These awards were presented to the following students at Columbia University in March of 2009:

Darrian Amaker (Brighton High School junior) for her photography portfolio
Roxanne Ravago (2008 Brighton High School graduate) for photography
Shin Wakabayashi (2008 Brighton High School graduate) for illustration

The Monroe County School Music Association held the All County Festivals during the month of March and many Brighton students participated.  Please click here for student photographs and for photographs taken at the rehearsals as well as a complete list of names.

Two Brighton High School students attended the New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) Symposium in March.  Christina Palis and Yoni Zuckerman attended the annual event held in Syracuse, New York on March 6 - March 8, 2009.

Brighton High School senior, Brianne Borden, received the Scholastic Arts Spotlight Award in March of 2009 to recognize her as one of the best young trumpet players in Rochester. The Scholastic Arts Spotlight Award program was created to recognize outstanding high school senior musicians, visual artists, dancers, and actors in the Greater Rochester Area. This program spotlights students high accomplishments and talent in an exclusive WROC-TV NEWS 8 NOW campaign, that includes a feature length news story and a promotional vignette. The Scholastic Arts Spotlight culminates at the end of each school year with a reception for all student award recipients and an award in the form of a sculpture to be created by a greater Rochester artist  representing all four art disciplines.  Click here to see Brianne's interview that was aired on television on March 23, 2009, which includes Brianne playing the trumpet.

Congratulations to Beth Hyland, Sam Langmann, Christina Palis, Audrey Rosenberg and Rachel Winsberg, the 2008-2009 Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra members!
